"A Valley Not Far From the Sea":

Video Images From "Il Porto,"
A Wild Canyon Near Positano, Italy
With Original Music

The valley of Il Porto is a wildlife oasis within the mountains of Positano, not far from the sea. Australian artist Vali Myers lived here from 1958 to 2002, and her companion Gianni Menichetti, artist and poet, continues her work to preserve this mystical place and defend it against development, logging, and hunting. He can be seen in this video in the beautiful surroundings of Il Porto, caring for his many animals; samples of his art work are also shown.

Video and original music by Peter Reimold

Lyrics for "A Valley Not Far From the Sea":

A valley not far from the sea
Deep silence, as deep as can be
No road, raw cliffs high above
A place few people could love.

Dark night till morning gleams fair
Yet life pulsing everywhere
Two people guarding it all
They share it with beasts large and small.

Beautiful souls, gentle eyes that see so deep
Their lives grow rich by the company they keep.
So near the town, yet centuries away
By the candlelight, at the end of their day
So much truth to say, to us.

A fox captured their heart
A throne was built with fine art
And there each evening she sat
Content in the woman's lap.

A cat befriending wild dogs
A river tumbling over rocks
Rare orchids thriving under their care
And dogs walking everywhere.

Beautiful souls, gentle eyes that see so deep
Their lives grow rich by the company they keep.
So near the town, yet centuries away
By the candlelight at the end of their day
So much truth to say, to us.

Oh, people may sneer
They think it queer
Living a life so bare.
"Witch, wild with tattoos, red hair…"
They don't see what's there.

A valley not far from the sea
Deep silence, as deep as can be
Two people, and then there was one
Alone, yet he carries on.

Beautiful soul, gentle eyes that see so deep
His life grows rich by the company he keeps.
So near the town, yet centuries away
By the candlelight, at the end of their day
So much truth to say, to us.
